Future Ruby!
Courtenay : June 24th, 2009
The very nice folks at Unspace sent me a beautiful care package today - a “handwritten” note and a huge poster. It mentioned that Future Ruby is in mid-july in Toronto, and invited me to come with my team.
I’m such a sucker for this type of marketing, so take heed ye marketers. Send me posters and tshirts!
I wish I could make it - Ruby Fringe had great press - but my visa ran out, and I can’t leave the US until it’s sorted out. I’ll be encouraging my team to go - but it’s a fair trek from the west coast
The best thing about this is the Russian glyphs they using in the title. One of the guys in the office HATES it when people abuse the backwards “R”. I will hang this poster and mock him mercilessly with its presence.

I can understand why he hates it--the backwards "R" makes the sound "ya" like in "yard". The same goes for the other Roman/Cyrillic characters. I hate it when marketers are too lazy to do their homework, too.

Not to be a stickler but I hate it when people use faux-commie propaganda to push their offerings. The idea that it is mixed with the term "future" and the idea that ruby will lead to progress, I can only imagine that this is a great use of irony.

That is a fine looking poster.

well i can understand the backward R. it gives the writing the look of a cryllic alphabet. i don't think it matters about the pronunciation of the letter in cryllic; the poster is not for readers of russian/cryllic, it is for readers of english/roman alphabet. using the correct cryllic letters would just be confusing to its intended audience.
and yeah, it's a great use of irony, but i think that stalinist era russian propaganda look is also popular simply because it's so striking, making it very effective for marketing and promotion.

Oh, it's really a pity that you can't go there for the credit card! It would be such a great experience, especially for you who are a big lover of this kind of marketing.
